(Last Update: 13.05.2024) In this article you Paris Municipality's rental bicycle service that you can see on all streets of the city Velib MetropolisI want to talk about. In fact, in 2014, when I first wrote this article, there was no such service in Turkey yet, and at that time there were no alternative bicycle and scooter rental options to bicycle rental. That's why I wrote a long and detailed article about how these bikes can be rented.

I think you have a better command of the subject now that similar service options are offered in Turkey. still to you Giving some tips on how to rent Velib bikes, sharing some important things about cycling in Paris I want. There are also a few YouTube videos I shot on my bike in the streets of Paris, which I think you will enjoy watching at the end of the article…

In the past, you could rent a Velib rental bike for the price of a daily bus ticket, and you had the right to unlimited use all day long as long as you changed the bike every half hour. So, Velib was a great option to explore Paris and enjoy the city. In 2017, Velib changed hands and was given to a subcontractor, and it took almost two years to renew the stations and bikes; For this reason, we all cooled down before this service that we once loved so much, but the work was completed and pandemic Since using public transportation in Paris was risky during the period, we turned to bicycles again for urban transportation.

After that, Velib gained importance for me again, but with the new company, Velib daily usage rules were restricted, and although the electric bike option was offered, the rental options were complicated and the enjoyment of use was never the same. However, since Velib is an important option for getting around Paris by bike, I did not want to update this article and share the information with you.

Of course, one of the most enjoyable ways to visit Paris is to rent a bike. Paris Municipality, developed for bicycle lovers and currently operated by a private company. Vélib brand, Velo (bicycle) ve Liberté (freedom) It was created by combining the words. When this service was transferred to the private sector, Metropole was added to it, so today it is called Vélib Metropole, but we will continue to call it Vélib.

One good thing about switching to a new company is that in the past Vélib bikes were only mechanical, Electric bike rental option has now been added And I have to admit, wandering around the streets of Paris on an electric bike is a different experience, but as I said, having to pay attention to the number of trips and make calculations since the unlimited daily rental right has been terminated as before, casts a shadow on your enjoyment of cycling.

Vélib has several rental options: One-time, 1-day, 3-day, monthly and annual. Since I think you will be in Paris for a touristic trip, I will focus on 1-day and 3-day rental options. First of all, you need to decide whether you want to rent a mechanical bike or an electric bike. If it were me, I would rent an electric bike; Because that option includes a mechanical bicycle, but if you rent a mechanical one, you can only use a classic bicycle. If you want to rent an electric bicycle, you have to pay extra. Prices and general conditions of use in that:

  • 24H Pass Classic - 24-Hour Classic Bike Rental 5€. It is free to use mechanical bicycles for half an hour. If you leave the bike at another station within half an hour, you can rent a new bike and continue on your way without paying any additional fee.. Theoretically, it is possible to spend your day this way. If you pass the half hour, each additional half hour 1€. 45 minutes if you rent an electric bike in this rental option 2€ and for every half hour 2€ you are paying.
  • 24H Pass Electric - 24-Hour Electric Bike Rental 10€. You can use electric bikes six times a day for 45 minutes without paying a fee. For every additional half hour 1€ is paid. Starting from the sixth trip, you pay 45€ for every 1-minute ride. If you want to rent a mechanical bike in this option, this time the time given to you is 1 hour. If you leave the mechanical bike at another station within 1 hour, you do not pay. If you exceed 1 hour, for every additional half hour 1€ you are paying.
  • 3-Day Pass - 3 Days Mechanical and Electric Bike Rental 20€. mechanical bicycles You are given unlimited free use per day, provided that it does not exceed 1 hour. For every additional half hour 1€ you are paying. electric bikes You can use it six times a day for 45 minutes without paying any fee. For every additional half hour 1€ is paid. For every 45 minute journey starting from the sixth journey 1€ you are paying…

In the past, there was an unlimited bicycle right for 1,70€ per day, 8€ per week, and life was great. As you can see, things are getting worse in Paris too. Likewise, monthly and annual usage options were incredibly cheap and gave unlimited usage rights, but now they give so few usage rights that I think those options are not even worth discussing. Still, those who are curious can see those prices and get information about other topics from the official web page link at the end of the article.

You can use the machines at the bike stations to rent Vélib bikes, but mine My advice to you is to apply online.. First, you sign up to the system and enter your credit card information and, of course, a deposit is deducted from you. Your deposit will now be refunded at the end of the period for which you will rent a bike. For this reason, it is important that you return the bike to the station safely and see the green light warning when you place it in its slot. For this reason, it is useful to check whether you have delivered the bike via the mobile phone application. Velib Android application from this link, You can download the iOS application from this link. You can download.

If your bike does not appear to have been returned, they may take the deposit from you. If you encounter such problems +33 (0)1 76 49 12 34 You need to call during business hours or contact us via the website.

The Municipality of Paris invested heavily in bicycle paths, especially during the pandemic period. It is now possible and enjoyable to cross the city by bicycle. However, I must say that there are some issues you should pay attention to:

One of the most important things you should pay attention to when cycling around Paris Always use roads reserved for bicycles and avoid using sidewalks. Unless otherwise stated municipal buses dedicated lanes for bicycles and taxis It can also be used by. One of the saddest rules for me is that they do not allow cycling in the city's beautiful parks. Seine River Pedaling along on a bicycle alleviates this sadness a little...

Vehicle owners are generally respectful towards cyclists, but in my opinion, since they are not very good at driving, you should still take care of yourself... I once Champs-Élyséesfrom to the love of cycling Triumphal archI made the mistake of entering the giant square where 12 roads are located, by bicycle :) I had chosen the land until I made the 180-degree tour and crossed to the opposite boulevard; I felt like I was driving a car and "by God" I managed to pass through an intersection where even cars could barely pass. Champs-ÉlyséesI went down to . Although it wasn't wise to cycle around there either, but naturally, one can have such unnecessary enthusiasm when it's the first day in Paris :) Nowadays, it is possible to pass around this island on a special road reserved for bicycles, but the super-intelligent municipality Champs-Elysees He laid paving stones on the bicycle path he built along the road. It is possible to pass a kidney stone while passing by on a bicycle. Also, I think the stone separating the bike path is dangerous, please be careful about that too.

It is also important to obey traffic lights. Although stopping at a red light on an empty bike path can be a bit ridiculous, it's up to you whether you follow the rules or not. Let me tell you…

I would love for you to somehow rent a bike with Vélib or other options and cycle around Paris. Especially between the Alma Bridge and the Concorde Bridge Grand Palais The taste of driving on the tree-lined road on the side is different. Later Concorde Square Bastille Square The main axle between and closed to vehicle traffic Rivoli Street The pleasure of cycling on it is completely different. There are many places to explore and enjoy by bike in Paris, as long as you want to travel and press the pedal…

Pleasant trips, pleasant discoveries…

  1. Thank you for the very careful and detailed information. I don't know if I understood correctly. But I guess you pay 24€ for the 5H Classic mechanical bike and even if you don't use it. Is it true?

    • Ahmet Ore Reply

Yes, that payment is taken whether you use it as the starting price or not. Thank you very much.

  2. Mr. Ahmet, first of all, I would like to thank you very much for this wonderful site and your efforts. There are 3 days left until I go to Paris, I'm taking an accelerated Paris course from you :) We want to rent a bike, I checked the Velib website, but I can't understand it very well because it's in French. Could the tariffs have changed? I understand that the deposit fee for 1 bike is 300 euros, and up to 5 bikes is 600 euros. Am I understanding correctly? Can you please help me?

      Hello Ms. Begum,
Unfortunately, the City of Paris performed very poorly in renewing the Velib bikes and could not finish the project for months.
Of course, there are people in the city using the new Velib, but since not all stations are activated, you cannot move around freely as before. Depending on the places you visit, you may be advantageous or disadvantaged. Since there are now both mechanical and electric bicycles, they have made the price issue more complicated. Frankly, I did not consider dealing with the issue before the project was completed, because if I wrote something, it would change two days later and I would not be able to follow it, so I would have given incorrect information. That's why I think there is no Velib in Paris these days. The website also has an English option, if you wish, you can review the prices there and make your own choice. Because there is no simple calculation method like before, whatever I say would be a lie; I don't know the new Velib yet either; I think the Paris Municipality doesn't know either :)

  3. Hello, I have just discovered your site and found it very useful. First of all, thank you very much for this. As for my question, is there a double bike in this vehicle? I would be glad if you could answer it. I wish you a good day.

    • Hello, thank you very much.
Unfortunately, there are no dual bike models for Velib, it would be nice if there were...
      Happy Days.

  4. I say it every time, it really is a great site... You have thought about every detail and explained it one by one... Thank you...

    • There will be no problem since you will put the folding bike in your luggage when boarding the plane and pick it up from the "special baggage" section at the airport when you arrive in Paris. The issue is whether the folding bike can be handed over to the luggage when boarding the plane, unfortunately I have no information about this issue…

  5. Hello Mr. Ahmet, Denfert Roc from Orlybus. When you get off, it is 4 km away from the center. Is there a place to rent a bike near this stop? It may be more economical and more enjoyable to continue by bike instead of taking another transportation vehicle for 4 km.

    • Hello, when you get off the bus at Denfert Rochereau and face the square, there is a Velib station on the far left side, but of course we do not know whether you will find a bicycle there when you arrive.

  6. Yes, we went there as two people. My suggestion is that you pay by card at the bike for each use. Taking it weekly is an unnecessary expense. Dress warmly, you will get cold while riding. We experienced the poles in August

    • First of all, thank you for your answer, but it seemed ridiculous to me to pay 150€ separately for each bike rental, so I wondered if it would be more advantageous to rent a bike weekly, and since we will be going at the end of September, I think it would be the most logical move to put this bike situation aside. Now, if you are cold even in this heat :)

    • Hello Ms. Damla, first of all, thank you very much for your nice comment.
Yes, as Mr. Fatih said, a deposit of 150 euros is required for each bike. After all, the price of each bike is set at 150€, think of it as if that money is refunded when you take it back, that's why the money is withdrawn twice.
The weather is never predictable; You can freeze in August and cook in October, Paris does not fit one day at a time :)
It's best to plan a day or two before you arrive.
      I wish you happy days.

    • Thank you very much for the information. I have a million questions in my mind right now, but I will read all your articles before I bore you with them. Good evening :)

  7. Hello, you have created an excellent site. I really read all the articles. If we are two people coming now, is there a possibility of renting two bikes when we buy one weekly ticket? Or do we need to buy seven days for each person separately and pay 150€ deposit twice?
    thank you now

  8. beats the black sea Reply

    Hello there,
I have a question: I want to benefit from this service for 3 days, but as far as I understand, I will do this by purchasing separate tickets for each day.
So my question is; Will I have to pay a deposit of 150 euros separately for each ticket? As far as I can see from the comments, we may not be able to receive the deposit money the next day, in this case neither the limit will be enough nor the holiday will continue:( Thank you in advance

    • Hello,
Yes, as you think, unfortunately you need to do this separately for each day, but I don't think there will be a problem since the 24 euro deposit will be refunded at the end of every 150 hours. So I think it will be returned immediately, I have never tried it. If you want to have peace of mind, pay 8 euros and buy a weekly ticket and withdraw 150 euros once. Unfortunately, I can't think of any other solution.
      Happy Days.

  9. Hello, I came to Paris for training for 2 months, this is my first week. While wandering along the Seine, I wanted to try the Vélib system you recommended, with the idea that maybe I'll use this system later. I inserted my credit card into the vending machine of station number 40006 to get information about how the ticket system works and proceeded to the payment stage. Then, frankly, I wanted to cancel the transaction because it seemed a bit complicated and I pressed the red annuler button several times without entering the password of my credit card, but at first it did not give me the card, then I pressed the button again. When I pressed it, I was able to get my card. I thought the transaction was canceled and left without touching any of the bikes, but about half an hour later, I received a message on my phone from my bank that 150 euros had been debited from my credit card without a password. I never picked up the bike from the station. Could someone have picked it up instead of me? If not, will the deposit money be refunded? And finally, should I call the call center within 24 hours? Thank you in advance.

    • Hello.
Of course, I don't know what actions you took, but there is a 99,9% chance that a deposit of €150 was withdrawn because you completed your registration. If you rented for a day, your money will be refunded after 24 hours, rest assured.
      Happy Days

    • Bonjour encore 🙂 First of all, I really appreciate your sensitive response to all comments and thank you very much for your answer. I am trying to benefit from your articles, which I like very much, to have a good time in Paris. I still haven't seen it in my bank account, but when the information arrives, I would like to share it with other readers. Thanks again.
      Thank you for your attention.

  10. I returned the bike 3 minutes after I picked it up at the same stop. The 150€ provision shows that there is no refund for 4 days... Should I be worried?

    • If you return your bike to any station and see the green light, you have done your part. 150€ will definitely be refunded to you.

    • They refunded the 14 euros they took as a deposit for my bicycle, which I rented on the 150th, as of the 20th. For your information

    • I'm glad the matter was resolved smoothly. This message will reassure many people who are/will be in your situation, so thank you very much.

    • Under normal circumstances, €150 is taken only as a provision and is automatically returned to your card at the end of the day.
