(Last Update: 27.01.2025) Here is another museum that you will enjoy visiting in Paris: Carnavalet Museum – Musée Carnavalet (museum carnival) ... Marais In my opinion, this museum, located in the heart of the Neighbourhood, is one of the most important museums in Paris, both due to its building and the works on display. We can think of it as a kind of Paris ethnography museum. The history of Paris, lifestyle, historical objects, photographs, hundreds of paintings, decorative materials, models and many other interesting works are exhibited in this museum; Moreover, this museum can be visited for free....

Musée Carnavalet, which I enjoyed visiting frequently when I first settled in Paris, was closed for restoration in 2018 and its reopening was not until mid-2021. Since the reservation rule was introduced during the pandemic period, I gave up on the museum because I could not visit it whenever I wanted as before, but later, even though the reservation rule was lifted, it is not as popular a museum as it used to be. But still, if you are coming to Paris for the first time, you should definitely visit this museum.

The museum used to be entered from the main entrance you see in the cover photo, but now it is entered from the side street. After the Covid period, reservations were required to enter the museum, but then they lifted that rule. Sometimes they may impose a new reservation requirement, but I may not have caught up with these rule changes and updated them in time. After the security check, you can enter and start your tour.

You are first greeted by old objects and some models that reflect the history of old Paris, and as you wander through the corridors and floors, you get lost in the history of Paris. You travel through history from one period to the next by following the arrows in the labyrinthine corridors. Even though it seems like there is a specific travel route, you can sometimes get confused at the frequent turns you will encounter and go beyond the ideal travel route.

Especially French Revolution The section about this is very impressive. I am sure you will enjoy seeing the original text of the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen", the model of the Bastille Prison and many other details about the revolution... While wandering among the works exhibited in the museum, one feels like he is in that century and his walk changes. Until you get tired of wandering and your feet start to hurt :) However, don't worry, Musée Carnavalet is on a more human scale than the other famous museums of Paris. Of course, if you try to pay the necessary attention to each work, the sightseeing will never end, but you can still enjoy all the works that interest you in half a day. You can review and complete your trip.

As I wander through the floors and corridors of the Musée Carnavalet, the objects I am happiest seeing are mostly items related to daily life from ancient periods. Some halls are designed from top to bottom according to the decor of those periods, while in some rooms you have the opportunity to examine the works displayed behind the showcases with the logic of a contemporary museum. In some halls, there are some items that children can experience by touching, and it makes you want to play with them :)

One of the most impressive parts of the Musée Carnavalet is an old jewelery shop This hall, whose decoration is exhibited, is the photo you see above. I think you will spend a lot of time in this shop furnished in art nouveau style. Although it seemed a little more magnificent to me in previous years, it looked like they had removed something after the restoration. Maybe my eyes have gotten used to it after seeing it for years, I don't know.

Another section at Musée Carnavalet that may attract the attention of those who know French literature closely is Marcel Proust's bedroom. Seeing this modest room may be meaningful for Proust lovers. Those who are interested in decorations from old periods will also have an idea about the understanding of the period.

Some parts of the museum appear before you with a much more magnificent presentation. In this regard, if you do not have time (or budget) to visit other museums in Paris, you may enjoy Musée Carnavalet to see different examples of the sumptuous French halls that are etched in our minds.

I also love spending time at the Musée Carnavalet, in front of the models that give an idea of what old Paris was like. Although it is not even close to Miniatur Wunderland, the magnificent miniature model museum that I visited in Hamburg, the models here are also very interesting in terms of introducing old Paris. The museum also has a section in the basement where objects from much older periods are exhibited, but I must admit that I couldn't stay there for long because it felt a bit stuffy.

As I said at the beginning, the museum is MaraisIt is in the heart of , but you can stop by while wandering around this region, but if you want to direct yourself to come directly to the museum, the best transportation option is M1 metro When you get off at the "Saint Paul" station of the line and go up from the station, walk a little to the right and walk straight up the street of CIC Bank.
What to do in the surrounding area before or after your museum visit? Marais District You can read the article. For up-to-date information about Musée Carnavalet, you can access the official website from the link below. Of course Sometimes a section of the museum may host periodic exhibitions. And these exhibitions are mostly paid. It is entirely up to you to visit the museum's permanent works for free or pay extra for periodic exhibitions.
Pleasant trips, pleasant discoveries.
