(Last Update: 07.09.2024) January 1, 2016 was a very important date for Paris. Because from this date onwards, Paris has become Grand Paris.. Well What does Grand Paris mean? Is it just a name change or has something really changed, and if so, what are these changes? In this article, I will try to tell you everything you want to know about Grand Paris, within the framework of what I know.

I say "what you're wondering about", but most people don't even know about it; Even the Parisians :) However, I always followed the Grand Paris project closely from the moment I first learned about it until it was implemented, because such administrative and mapping changes of cities always excite me.

Earlier What is Périphérique? ve What is Arrondissement?? in my writings and even A Week in Paris As I mentioned in my book, Paris is not actually as big a city as we think. To make it come alive in our eyes We can think that Paris covers an area the size of Beşiktaş and Üsküdar combined on the map.. Dividing the city in two Seine RiverIf we consider it like the Bosphorus, it is okay. Paris is all built on this much area. A city slightly larger than 100 square kilometers at work. It would be more accurate to say “it was a city” because as of January 1, 2016, Paris has grown and become Grand Paris. I keep saying Grand Paris Grand Paris, but it's still fun how it's read. As a Turk, of course we will say Grand Paris, but if we try to say it in French, "Gran Paris” even and even if we push a little harder “Gğgan PağğiWe need to say :)

The administrative management structure in France is strange. Let's not say it's strange, but let's say it's not exactly the way we understand it. The country was first divided into two main administrative divisions:RegioneIt is divided into . We can think of Region as a state, this part is easy... Divisions It forms the subdivisions of regions. This department issue is a bit complicated; In my opinion, departments that are larger than the province and smaller than the state are "cityIt consists of: At first glance ville (vile) Although it means "city-city" in Turkish, I think it is not exactly like that. In Turkey, I perceive them as administrative structures that are smaller than a city and larger than a district, and there are hundreds of them in France. For example, large cities such as Paris, Bordeaux, Nice and Lyon are villes; Courbevoie, Enghien Les Bains, Maisons Lafitte, Province places like districts, in my opinion, city passes as.

The position of Paris is very different. as Region Ile-de-Francelocated in Paris is both department and ville. That's why it's confusing. As if this were not enough, now with the implementation of the Grand Paris project, three departments around it (Hauts de Seine, Seine Saint Denis ve Val de Marne) is growing to include it.

How the new map will be shaped and which “villes” will be affected by this growth has been a matter of long debate. While Grand Paris functioned as a special department, the administrative subgrouping was divided into 12 “territoires” before being divided into villes.territory or teğğituağğğ)” divided into . According to the new structure called T1, T2, T3…..T12, for example, the place still called Paris is T1, DefenseThe section where is T4, Charles de Gaulle AirportT7 is where Orly AirportThe section containing is coded as T12.

Each “territoire” consists of “villes” as subgroups, or in other words “town (communeIt consists of )”. In this case, the three departments surrounding Paris will gradually disappear and the communes there will be connected to Grand Paris. It is not possible for me to understand the structure of the board of directors :)

After this change, not much will change for metropolitan people like us. Because it seems to us Defense in Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport ve Orly Airport also in Paris. Is there a city without a financial center or airport? 🙂 By the way, considering the official government structure, there was neither a financial center nor an airport in Paris, all of these were in other departments outside of Paris, that is, in other “villes” :) Finally, the French decided to make a decision and prepared the management map of the city. They decided to expand. With this project, which has been implemented as of January 1, 2016, but will take a few years to fully establish, Paris is now "La Metropole du Grand ParisIt can be a world metropolis as we know it.

This is one of the most important aims of the project. On the one hand, it is an effort to bring sustainability to Paris as a world metropolis, and on the other hand, it is an effort to overhaul the administrative management and bring it into line with the requirements of the age.

Borough Those who read my article about it know that, “Where is the real Paris?Answering the question "is always a matter of debate. Residents within the 20 arrondissement of Paris peripheral They never consider the outside as Paris. However, I always laugh at this. Because Paris in the 19th century consisted of only 12 arrondissement and the number order was not like today. In other words, we should not consider the new arrondissement other than the first 12 arrondissement as Paris in this logic. Except for the 12 arrondissement at that time Villette, Passy and even Montmartre Imagine if we did not count places like Paris as Paris... Because, just like today, the administrative area of the city was expanded and the surrounding regions were included in Paris. Even if we were to exaggerate, Roman Paris was located only on the present-day Cité Island, in this situation Cite IslandWe shouldn't consider those who live outside of Paris as Parisians :) Although Paris was called Paris at that time. Lutèce Arena As I stated in my article, it is not Paris Lutece', that is a separate topic...

I mean Paris has now become Grand Paris and its surface area has grown 7 times! Of course, this doesn't happen just by making changes on the map. Many projects are being implemented by planning the effects of the growth of the city, especially public transportation. The leading and most mentioned public transportation project is Grand Paris Express.

Grand Paris Express Pariste.Net

For the Grand Paris Express, a trip around the Grand Paris metro We can call it a project, but thinking like that would still be insufficient. While it is planned to establish a rail system network that will surround Grand Paris like a ring, rail system lines extending beyond this are also being created. In fact, one of the most mentioned projects is the construction of the existing metro line number 14 in the north. Charles de Gaulle Airportto, in the south Orly AirportExtension up to . In other words, when this project is completed, transportation between the two airports will be provided with a single rail system. Also for now Gare Saint Lazarestarting/ending in RER-E of the line DefensePassing through and extending westwards and Mante La JolieThe construction of the project to reach . La Défense station completed in 2024… In other words, in this public transportation project that will be realized in stages, Up to 2030 Grand Paris will be surrounded by a rail system and Paris Metro network in total 300 kilometers will have found it. Of course available RER The renewal of lines and stations will also be carried out within the scope of the project. this too Renting or buying a house in Paris It will obviously be a determining factor in our decisions on the subject.

Yes, as of January 1, 2016, Paris has grown and become Grand Paris. Witnessing such historical events always excites me. Just like Paris in the 19th century boroughNew communes were added to Paris, such as the addition of 's. Even though it will be called Grand Paris from now on, I believe that every region called Grand Paris will soon be called simply Paris. Although for metropolitan people like me, all these places are already Paris, but at least administratively, it will be Paris as well. Of course, what I say will not happen at once; It will take a long time for the huge French bureaucracy to transition to the new system.

In summary, this is the situation. Now you know what Grand Paris is as much as I do. If you know more information and share it with us, we would of course be very happy.

To happy and beautiful tomorrows…

  1. The total surface area of Beşiktaş and Üsküdar is not even half of the surface area of Paris.

      Hello,
I just checked once again on Wikipedia. Üsküdar says 58 square kilometers, Beşiktaş says 46 square kilometers. Considering that Paris is also 105 square kilometers, I think my analogy is wrong.
      Happy Days.

  2. I follow your articles with great pleasure, Paris is a treasure for those who are considering traveling :) But there is something that bothers me, doesn't region literally mean region? So how is it different from the regions in Turkey (Aegean, Mediterranean, etc.)? Thank you in advance :)

      Hello,
First of all, thank you very much.
The word region used in French - in my opinion - does not fully correspond to the concept of region in Turkey. Because Türkiye is divided into seven geographical regions, but these are not political administrative units; Every city in Turkey was directly connected to Ankara. In France, each region is like a kind of federal structure - although not completely. Sub-clusters of communes and provinces merge to become departments, and departments merge to form separate regions. Each of them has a manager, governor, president, etc. That's why I think that the word "region" corresponds perfectly to "region" as a form of government in France.
      Happy Days.

  3. Paris Metropolitan Municipality is working... :) It must be an administrative structure close to our Metropolitan Municipality system, although not exactly. One of the things that surprised me the most about Paris in terms of the rail system is that the vehicles, signaling systems and geometric features of almost all lines are different from each other. Of course, the fact that they have been done from time to time for centuries has an effect on this. I wish we had old but many rail system alternatives :) It is very right to have a top management that can look at the metropolitan area holistically in terms of management and correct use of resources... Good luck to Gğğan Pağği... :)
